It was around 2000 that wood artist JoAnn VanDeCarr heard about Why We Buy by Paco Underhill. “It has been revised many times since,” she said. The book is about the psychology behind store item placement and buying decisions.
VanDeCarr said it is a “scientific study of retail stores and customer buying habits, but I found a lot of advice related to gallery or booth displays. Half of this business is in the creating, and half is in the selling. People stop to look at movement so try adding a banner or mirror. Group like items but always put a few in a second location; it doubles your chance they will be noticed. People will stop buying when their cart (or hands) are full — offer to hold items at your desk.”
She said that What Women Want, also by Underhill, was published later and is just as detailed. “Consider the fact that women are intimidated by physical closeness and feeling pressured, so don’t pounce or put your chair in the aisle,” VanDeCarr said. “Both books are available as e-books and paperbacks. Use your library.”
